I entered the wonderful world of KAM Snaps a year ago. It all started with a cloth diaper project I had on my hands, but I now know that KAM Snaps are the perfect tool for an endless amount of diy projects. Even the not-so-crafty will find uses for these things!
(Don’t believe me? Check out their 101+ snap uses & tutorials for a few ideas that prove how handy these things are! Make baby rompers, no-sew un-paper towels, mama cloth, convert a regular bra into a nursing bra, etc!!)
But, back to my story…
I had several velcro-closure cloth diapers that badly needed to be updated. Grovia has a great snap conversion progam for $5 per diaper + shipping and a two week turn around, and my bumGenius conversions would have costed $10 each (local seamstress). At that point I calculated that I could either pay $75+ to have 9 of my old diapers converted, or buy 4 brand new snap-closure diapers with the same money. I wasn’t quite satisfied with either of those choices.
But do it myself?? Snap equipment from sewing and craft shops seemed to have mediocre reviews and lofty price tags. Maybe there was another option? After doing what I do best (googling, foraging through blogs, and reading reviews) I found there was a fantastic alternative.
KAM Snaps is a California-based company that sells quality snap presses, hand-held press pliers, and snaps (among other cool items). They are one of the few suppliers I could find that make snapping a snap with their inexpensive materials, easy-to-use equipment, and a vast assortment or colors and sizes of snaps to choose from.
I also learned that they were family-operated and that the vision of the company was founded out of their passion to rescue homeless pets. If I converted the diapers myself I would get to keep all 9 in working order, have left over supplies for future projects, pay only a fraction of the cost of hiring someone else to do it, all the while supporting a good cause!
And if you really want a high selling point, they are available through Amazon Prime too!
I ordered through their website and my snaps arrived in only 2 days. The supplies were small enough to stick in a tote bag (along with a printed copy of their diaper conversion tutorials) and bring along on a road trip with us the following weekend. I figured the passenger seat would be a great place to work on them; both girls would be locked up in car seats rendering them unable to eat the snaps or try to “help.”
That weekend I got all 9 diapers done (in the car, on my lap) and snickered at my what IF‘s. The question should have been what ELSE can I snap together?
Anyone who is remotely crafty needs a set of KAM Snaps on hand. And for those who don’t cloth diaper or feel even the smallest bit creative, surprise yourself. A KAM Snaps set will bring the diy instinct out in you!
