Hi, we are the Colemans and we are starting a Natural Living blog. You might say that we are “going green,” but don’t let that label throw you off. At the core, being green doesn’t make us that different from anyone else. We really just want one thing: to be healthy. Doesn’t everyone want that?
LET’S DEFINE “GOING GREEN”
Being green suggests an “all-natural” or “non-toxic” approach that is earth conscious. It can be related to food, medicine, cleaning supplies, recycling, or pretty much anything else! There are two main things that can be green:
Many items are now advertised and labeled with green buzz words like all natural, biodegradable, non-toxic, plant-based, or eco-friendly. Their labels give off a superior and healthier tone, and since we all want to be healthy, green products have become hot sellers.
When a person goes green or strives for green living they might also be referred to as being a hippie, Earth mama, granola, or crunchy (to name a few names!). These are the people that might make their own green products because the ones at the store still contain some type of toxin. They might (or might not) recycle, compost, be breastfeeding advocates, cosleep, homeschool, not vaccinate, ferment things, DIY their way through the pantry and medicine cabinet, avoid plastic, or be able to name more carcinogens than anyone else even knew existed.
Somehow green products are desirable and in demand, but a green person can be perceived as a little off the rails.
Sure, a crunchy person may lean toward alternative medicine or adopt natural philosophies in parenting or general living, but they haven’t made counter-culture choices just for the sake of it. The root of their decisions still come down to a common denominator shared with everyone else: We all just want to be healthy. All of us.
We are each willing to devote different levels of time or types of attention to this goal, but no matter where we are in our lifestyles, we can relate to wanting this same thing.
OUR FAMILY’S GREEN JOURNEY
My husband & I were both concerned with clean eating even before we met, but overall we were just “normal.” All of the sudden pregnancy came along and the hazards began to matter, the cupboards got cleared out, and a search for more safe or gentle options ensued.
Yes, we are kinda into this natural parenting thing. A “green family,” some might call us. I would say the label isn’t all that helpful; We just want to be healthy.
We don’t expect everyone to go green. We respect that all of us want to be healthy and are travelling different roads & speeds to getting there. Still, we hope that our experiences will at some level inspire you toward being healthy, conscious, and creative!
